Best route from Sydney to Byron Bay?

Discussion in 'Roads, Touring, Journeys, and Travel' started by tinks, Feb 11, 2006.

  1. I haven't ridden the route for about 10 years.
Does anyone have any good tips for an alternative to the dreaded Pacific Highway? Any nice twisties or interesting sections I could cobble together? I've got 2 days each way, a week apart.

  2. Are you kidding?

    Oh, man...

The Grafton-Ebor road, Dorrigo mountain, the Oxley, Thunderbolts Way... they're all there for the taking.

    (cue palpitations)
  3. Gosh, I haven't been up there since 2000, but we went to Lismore, Tenterfield down to Glen Innes and it was fun, although the policeman at Glen Innes was just mean to me. See if you can cobble together something involving the Gwydir Highway, the Oxley or Thunderbolts Way, The Waterfall Way is a nice diversion from the Pacific too (near Coffs), so many good roads to travel. Thunderbolts is the only one I haven't done yet and that is cos it was pissing down torrential rain at the time. These are all recommendations.

Mind you, I am a girle and cannot read maps. I leave all the planning to himself and he takes it very seriously too.

He is currently planning a devious and circuitous route up to Noosa in September for us - avoiding Sydney, but he is at work currently so I can't ask.
  4. Best Route Sydney to Byron

Leave Sydney then head up the Putty Road to Singleton, From their Head back towards Maitland , then up through Stroud, Gloucester, Nowendod and then Walcha. If you like Excursions head off down to wauchope to do the range and do a U turn and head straight back to Walcha. I know I do, but then again I'm demented.
From Walcha head to Armidale, then follow the signs to Grafton Via Ebor. Make sure to stop at the Nymboida coaching station for a feed and drink. Their are many excursions you can do from Grafton, but best to head across to Casino, Lismore, Bangalow Byron Bay as I'm sure saddle soreness would set in by now!
Of note the run through Nowendoc, Walcha and Armidale only adds 40km to the Newcastle/Grafton journey (except for Walch Range excursions)
  5. Great guys. Thanks heaps.
