Belatedly, remembering Ash Wednesday 1983

Discussion in 'The Pub' started by hornet, Feb 14, 2013.

  1. Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the infamous Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983. I was living in Yarra Junction at the time, and it was a terrifying night. At least 18 towns were partially or fully destroyed in the hours of darkness, and many more than the stated 90-odd fatalities occurred.

Although it was 30 years ago, many people still suffer the scars and condolences and sympathy are still due them.

  2. And it was 4 years since Black Saturday last week as well :(
  3. Good call Paul. Although the years have dulled the shock, Ash Wednesday was seen at the time as surpassing even the horrendous original Black Friday.
I was on the west coast that day, and there wasn't a man, woman or child along the whole surf coast that knew whether they were going to survive. In the end it wasn't the worst hit area which only goes to show how bad it was elsewhere.
  4. 30 years ago, my, how time flys, I was fighting the fires in Gippsland,
I would not have thought it was that long ago.
