For many, many years, in the 30s through to the seventies, just such a verbal war was carried on between the Rector of St Barnabas' Anglican Church, Broadway, in Sydney, and the publican of the hotel across the road. The compilation of their verbal stoushes was published in a book called, as I recall, "The Preacher and the Publican". I don't think it still available, sadly.

    Equally sadly, St Barnie's burned to the ground a few years ago, but its congregation had the last word, because the pub had closed down some years earlier and now is not used.
