art or craft?

  1.  Top
  2. It's been considered art for around 500 years or so.
Just search for "trompe l'oeil" (French for "deceive the eye").
  3. Art is the product of an artist, and as the guy is considered an artist it is art.
  4. Has the object a use other than to be beautiful or to pique curiosity? No? Then it's art.

Is it an object with a purely functional purpose, however much skill has gone into creating it? Yes? Then it's craft.

Is it a functional object in which the object's functionality is balanced with or subordinated to aesthetic considerations? Then it really depends upon whether you like it and how much.

Historically, there has been a lot of snobbery involved in denying artistic status to the products of skilled tradesmen. (Tho' PatB's wife might have a contrary opinion on this. :p )
  5. Then it's neither art nor craft. It's 'design'. :bolt:
  6. au contraire! :)
