Big news, but where's the scandal? A politician in his 60s retires.

He's a senator, which means it has no affect on the numbers of the minority government. He will be replaced in the senate by another tasmanian green.

I'm sad to see him go. I'm thinking retirement for the 67 year old.

The question is, what will happen to the greens now? I know a lot of labor type supporters who see the greens as the only real alternative to right wing politics in Australia. Will Christine Milne reside over a slow demise like the Democrats? Does she have voter appeal? Or will she be a three year stop gap for Sarah Hansen-Young, who is always in the news.

We wait for the next installment from Canberra...

Be careful what you wish for when a very real alternative is Senator Very-Young.

You might disagree with his politics and policies but a more ethical and principled person in politics would be hard to find. See ya Bob.

I think part of the problem was that for most Australian Greens = Bob Brown. This allows them to establish themselves as a party (rather than an individual) before the next election.

  19. Interesting (though speculative) comparison of the Greens' current situation with that of the Dems on changing leaders in the past here.

And I'm pleased to see that they've shown a degree of sanity in selecting their new deputy leader. Either that or they find Sarah Hanson-Young as irritatingly smug and self obsessed as I do.
