Heard this on the radio Monday morning, so did probably half the forum, but I'II put it up anyway. 3 men rent a motel room at the cost of $30 ($10 each). After a short while, the manager realises he over charged the 3 men and gives the bell boy $5 to return to the men. The bell boy decides it's too hard to split $5 three ways so gives the men $3 and keeps $2 for himself. Each man has now recieved $1 refund, so has each paid $9 for the room. 3 x $9 =$27, and the bell boy has $2, total $27 + $2 = $29 :? Where did the other $1 go??

My attempt at explaining myself in white below. Highlight to read. $30, $5 refund. i.e. rooms cost $25. 3x9 MINUS 2 = 25. Or another way of thinking about it. Each has actually paid $8.33 for the rooms, and $.66 each to the boy. 3x9=27, + 3 refund = 30. $2 the boy has is part of the 3x9.

The trick is in this bit: They only paid $27 dollars at the end of the day (($9 each). It's nonsensical to add $2 to that, because the pool after their refund is only $27, not $30 (owner has $25, bell boy $2).

wow...how does 25 + 3 =27 :? last time i checked (don't have a calculator infront of me though) equaled 28 + bell boy has the other 2 dollars? so each man actually paid 9.33??? where as if th emanger had said Wow, am going to have to invite you guys on my tours from now on then screw up the price add and subract a few times and i reckon i could end up making a profit

stepping through the algorithm in columns of 1) three men 2) manager 3)boy -30 30 0 sum = 0 "men pay manger" -30 25 5 sum = 0 "manager pays boy 5" -27 25 2 sum = 0 "boy gives 3 to men" no prob here

That's precisely the problem though, they are not out of pocket $9.33, only $9.00? They were refunded $1 after paying $10.

The motel owner has $25 in his pocket. The kid has $2 in his pocket. And have in their pocket $3. {$1 each} Total $30. Whats the question again. They paid $8.33 each for the room. And 66.6 cents each "tip" for the kid. $8.33+66.6 cents =$9 x 3=$27 for motel and tip. $9 each. Don't mind me ,I had to repeat alot a school. I was 28 with I did my HSC.

3 men paid $30 = 3 x $10 Refund = $5 Bellboy tip = $2 Total men paid for room = $30 - $5 refund =$25 Bellboy tip = $2 Total men paid out = $25 + $2 = $27 with $3 "change" = $30 No missing dollar, it is all read out wrong in order to confuse the listener/reader.

So basically the manager gets away with an extra dollar and the men lose out by a dollar each. woopty-doo, it's a dollar!

:? No the manager gets away with $25 only, and the men lose out by $0.66 each, so woopty-doo, it's sixty six point six six six cents! So funny how this riddle never gets old... and theres always someone who questions why there are 3 men in one cheap motel room.
