89 VTR specs and general info

Discussion in 'Bling and Appearance' started by hankg, Nov 27, 2008.

  1. Hi fella's,
This is my first post here but I think it's the place I need to be. I have had many, many bikes and have always worked on them myself. I have recently picked up a KYMCO 2004 Venox 250. This machines engine looks to be a twin of the VTR 250 / Magna 250 engine. I have purchased a 1989 VTR 250 engine with 12000k on it. Am trying to find out some of the similarities from guys, that might know more about them. I know the Venox is a five speed and the VTR is a six speed. Engine layout appears to be the same. I believe the engine might bolt right into my frame as is. Am interested in knowing what the horsepower and torque of the VTR was in 89. Am thinking I might try swapping out the engines just to see what I might gain in performance. My VTR engine is complete except, it is missing the carbs. My thinking is the the VTR might have had a more HP & highly tunes set of carbs. My stock horsepower on the Venox is 28 hp, at 11.5k I forget the torque at the moment. Your forum seems to have many more posts then some of the forums I have checked out and it would appear many more of you do much of your own work. This is exactly what I am looking for. If any of you out there can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide. Look forward to swapping thought etc. with you. ... Hank G.

  2. hank the yank, G'day.
  3. And, G'day, right back atcha . ................ Hank G.
  4. there are alot of VTR250 owners on here, but i dont think there is more than 3 VTR250F owners, none of which seem to be super active.
i was looking at buying one of these as a POS to do up, looks like a fun piece of kit

here's hoping you get some more info :)

EDIT: the bike/engine you're asking about, is it from an '89 VTR250, or a VT250F?
  5. a bit of googling, and i've come up with this.

    '89 VTR250 specs: http://www.tomiandcarl.com/honda_250.htm
also, check the engine and carburettor numbers against the following chart http://www.cmsnl.com/img/partslist/serial-numbers-vtr250-interceptor-vtr-1989-us_bigHU0272SERIAL.gif. if you have a californian type (different emissions ratings) then the engine should put out 32HP, if it's non-californian, then 43HP. this is taken from the following page http://www.vtr250.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1215004050

most importantly, the following website should be of much more help to you, than Netrider. (not that you should stop using netrider  )
http://www.vtr250.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl a forum devoted to VTR250's in particular the Interceptor aka the 1988-1990 Honda VTR250, that which your engine seems to be from.

  6. Best I can tell it's the basic VTR 250, am thinking seriously about dropping it into my Taiwanese Venox 250 chassis. If it will fit?????
  7. i have no idea if it will fit.
check out the locations on you Venox where the engine is mounted. measure distances, clearances etc.

then measure the mount points on the VTR engine.
if it looks ok, give it a go!

the worst that can happen is it wont fit, and you just have to refit the old engine. take a day off, a bit of elbow grease, and you're set to find out :)

let us know how it goes!
