2002-2011 SA Motorcycle Fatalities, analysis/trends

    "The incidence of motorcycle death and serious injury has increased in South Australia as a proportion of all road deaths, while other road user trauma has generally decreased.

    Figure 1 shows the number of motorcycle riders and pillion passengers killed or seriously injured on South Australian roads each year since 2002. It also shows the number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured as a proportion
    of all serious road casualties. Each year motorcyclists have become a larger part of road serious casualties increasing from 11% in 2002 of all serious casualties to 17% in 2011."

    Strangely the graph shows 218 in 2006 and 173 in 2011 which is a downward trend.

    "SA comparison to other States and Territories

    In 2011, motorcycle riders and pillion passengers accounted for 20% of all road fatalities in South Australia, up on the previous five-year average of 14%.
    This compares with other states such as
    Victoria 17%,
    NSW 14%,
    Queensland 17%
    Western Australia 16% in 2011.

    South Australia’s rider fatality rate for 2011 was the highest amongst all jurisdictions."

The most likely explanation for the statistic that the percentage of serious MC casualties is going up as a proportion of all MV casualties, is that while the rates of serious MC casualties is relatively stable, the other MV casualty rates are going down over this period. This makes sense if you think about the improvements in MV design - airbags etc in cars.

    ie car improvements -> less overall deaths, so bike deaths account for more of them.

    It is notable that there has likely been a significant increase in bike registration/use over this period and that therefore the rates per rider might be lower than in 2002.
  3. Not so much stable, it's decreasing, but at a lesser rate than other users.
    Even more complicated, the proportion of MC users compared to car drivers is increasing, which would infer an automatic increase in the proportion.

    As soon as you see these (factual, but) highly selective interpretations in the summaries, you've got to suspect an editorial agenda at work.
  4. At the Victorian PIMS, both VicPol and RACV (and a couple of other folk) argued that the rider fatality rate was rising because the percentage was rising. Dopes.

    If total fatalities is likened to a pie and the rider stats considered to be a slice, then if the pie is reducing but that slice remains the same or decreases more slowly than the pie, the percentage it represents will increase. Problem is you will see many reports and media articles proclaiming the percentage as a self evident siren call that something must be done.

    MC fatals are 20 -25% of totals in some parts of the UK. It's sending some pollies into a tizz.
  5. Late to the thread here , last summer SAPOL ran Operation Hills Safe from couple weeks prior to Xmas right thru to end of February . Ostensibly targeting all "Hooning Motorists" in reality were targeting motorcyclists in the hills . Official media release went something along the lines of " motorcyclists make up a large proportion of speeding vehicles in the hills but we will be targeting all speeding motorists . . . " . They were quite open in their statement that they would be using covert tactics to catch speeding motorists eg. hidden speed cameras , unmarked vehicles etc . This comes on top of since circa 2006 a widespread lowering of speed limits throughout the Adelaide Hills region - most roads down from 100kph limit to 80 , some down to 70 and a few down to 60 ! - as well as most roads being swathed in some cases from end to end in double white lines (even where previously there had been legal overtaking sections )
