2 strokes....learner heaven or hell?

Discussion in 'New Riders and Riding Tips' started by .wal., Jan 20, 2013.

  1. Anyone like to share war stories about their first bike or want to pass on advice to beginners or potential 2 stroke buyers? iv just bought an aprilia rs125 2005 and a complete spare set of race fairings($250), iv heard these are fun bikes but require diligent maintenance, looking forward to both, ill let you guys know how it all pans out, reliability etc.

  2. The rs125 is a good bike. Light, handles well, Fairly bulletproof if maintained properly.
In some ways they are a good learners bike, because below powerband they are fairly gutless. But on that point, do be careful of the powerband(even being a 125).

Maintenance wise. Run a good 2 stroke SYNTHETIC oil (Motul is great, Castrol TTS is alright 2), and keep it full(spare small bottle under the seat to be safe).

Besides that, regular bike stuff. And top end rebuild every 6000kms. Its actually quite an easy job on a rs125, since the engine is so small. Parts are quite cheap online, after market stuff such as mitaka are pretty good.
