01 V-star failing to start/stalling

Discussion in 'Technical and Troubleshooting Torque' started by Oscar33, Apr 25, 2008.

  1. Hi guys
My friend has a 2001 V-Star 250cc, it has approx 43k on the odometer and was serviced about one month ago at his local yamaha dealer.
The bike is kept under the carport and is ridden daily roughly 110-150 kilometers.

The problem is when he pushes the starter button the bike makes a strange whirring noise as if the battery is flat, push starts were working but not any more, the bike also needs the choke out all the time when being ridden to keep its rpm up or else it stalls.
All these problems were addressed when it was taken in for service and have since reappered.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed
(told him to get a virago )
  2. Sounds 2 things are amiss here!
Firstly it sounds like he has a fuel blockage in the idle circuit, drain floats and check fuel for debris!
secondly it sounds like the starter clutch is cactus! (whirrs but doesn't engage)
alternatively the starter connection on the starter motor may be loose, bad earth on engine, weak solenoid or dodgy battery!
If he has no mechanical aptitude take it to someone who does!!!!
    Hope it helps
