  1. This is an excellent and thorough analysis of your approach, katekate! I don't think I've seen anyone go through the process in such a level-headed and comprehensive way. I'd have liked to have read your post when I was buying my first motorcycle.

  3. katekate you are far and away the most erudite new rider I've come across. I wonder how different my bike choices would have been if I had read this list before I started... On that note, you test ride any more bikes?

  5. Hey Steve VtecSteve Vtec and thanks for the kind words. I'm slowing up on the test riding this weekend as my journey is coming to a natural conclusion. There is one particular bike that I just can't get out of my brain. I am about ready to make a decision I reckon! I'll be sure to keep updating the forums as things progress.

  7. Thats a wonderful summary. Well done. Im on a naked, but have nothing to compare it with, but just did around 700 km over 2 days on it.

  8. If it is stinking hot, my choice is a naked (bike that is). If it is cold then I want the protection from the wind and rain. I can go into my shed and get a bike that is best for the weather. So if we are talking of where you live and you can only have one bike, I would go naked. If I lived in Victoria with their winter and I was riding all year round I would want my Goldwing.
    Now if we talk about the weight of a bike and if I was a learner. I would have the light bike. Even a light bike that is off balanced is hard to stop it falling.
    What about the power of a bike. It is important that the performace is enough for the type of riding that you are going to be doing and your riding style. I like small bike's but also know that for open road riding you need 30-34hp. Because on the open road with a strong wind, you need that much power. Now this is where the size and weight of the rider come's into the power of the bike. You will not catch much wind and if you were much lighter, you could get blown off the bike.(not really)
    While we are talking about the power and performance. That great big Goldwing that you seen when we met. A 300 Ninja will keep up with that bike in the top end. But the Ninja is not going to carry two people in comfort like that wing will.
    Your body size will also mean that some bike's are not a good idea. For an extreme. You do not want a Goldwing. ( I know that you are a learner and can't ride a Goldwing) But a light bike that can do open road work with a light ride maybe the way to go. Try and push my Goldwing around and then go push my 250 around. The 250 wins hands down. So why do I have a Goldwing? Because it is the most comfortable two up bike and I want my wife to ride with me.
    The bike that you get is all up to you and I am not going to say what bike that is.
    For me there is one last consideration..................if you can't do your own maintenence, you need a dealer that you are happy with.

  9. Good write up, Kate. I would say that riding position is not particularly related to whether the bike has a fairing or not but to the intended use of the bike. So a sports bike will have a sporty riding position, a touring bike will generally be more relaxed. Sport touring somewhere in between. Both my current bikes have a full fairing and neither of them have an aggressively sporty riding position. The riding position of the faired GS500F and the unfaired GS500 is virtually identical.

    One additional benefit of a plain coloured fully faired bike is that it presents a very large and recognizable outline that may be more easily identified by caged brains than the rather confusing mishmash of shapes that go to make up a naked bike or the multicoloured flashes of colour that tend to be applied to sports bike fairings.
