  1. nice little read, although I think alot of this is covered in the Learners book, and during your course.

  2. This may be in the learners manual but it is still amazing how many riders pick up bad habits and/or become lazy riders in some shape or form! :)

  7. sorry but these 2 are completely incorrect, we are taught on our learners never cover the front brake, cos in the event of a inccident you you already have your fingers around the lever you have more chance of over reacting locking up the front and laying her down

    when you swerve you should glimps around the obstruction but get your eyes back on your path asap push onside of the bars then the other, as we are taught with the obsticle manouvre on the P's test
  8. I was taught not to cover the brakes all the time, but to cover them in potential danger zones i.e. shopping precincts, school zones :?
  9. The assume you're invisible tip is one of the best. I almost ended up on a mazda's bonnet on beach road tonight. She looked at me coming towards her, then at the car behind me and decided she could make it in front of the car having forgotten I was there. She saw me last minute and skidded and I did a huge counter-steer around her front end - certainly got the adrenalin going for the rest of the ride home! :eek:

  13. Always watch their eyes and head and work out where they are looking.
  14. ...cover your brakes whenever the risk is there... intersections, driveways etc etc ... in time you can even manouvre slowly with front brakes covered.

    Not sure how you're disagreeing with the swerve tip qbn... pretty much said the same thing...
  15. no i said glance at it to check the path your going to take around the obtrussion to make sure it is clear not follow the path with your gaze,

    and the covering the brakes during times where there could be a risk of a inccident, yes but your not supposed to just have your hand over the top of the lever because it still allows you to over react, your suspposed to go into set up until the risk has gone

    Don't hurry to get somewhere (unless perhaps its the finish line on a proper track). No; twisties don't count. Better to be late than on your way to hospital. [8, 24 & 37 don't quite convey that senitment IMO]

    Think of the things that you would risk death and dismemberment for... and then instead of rushing, check if your current situation is one of those. I'll wager you its not.

    Sometimes i think "I can be 2-3 cars ahead if I take that gap...". Then I think "...but I won't feel any happier for arriving 20 seconds sooner so i'll go with the flow"

    I'm finding that more and more i'll actually keep the 6 second gap recommended at the L-P courses (in the car too, and that was previously unheard of)

    On the flip-side, i'll split a long line of traffic if it means getting out of bumper-to-bumper traffic (but always beware of gaps cos car drivers are impatient and if they could get in it, they'll try, or theres a reason they're not). Prior to riding, I'd always assumed splitters were just impatient too, but its real hard sitting at a standstill in leathers on a hot day.

Look where you want to goThis is so so important and even experienced riders can forget in an emergency, which is when you need it most. ie, entering a corner too hot, some panic and brake (run wide/crash) other look to where they want to go, while getting off the brakes and trusting that front wheel and usually get though.

    Another tip is to get out on a dirt bike in the bush. The skills you will learn in just a weekend will take you years to learn on the road and the dirt is a relative safe environment (compared to in traffic!).
