Okay, roll with me on this one, for those of you that may be into older music like me-you'll get the reference, if you dont-the youtube "The Stranger" by Billy Joel.
When I pull my helmet on, I become an anonymous road user. Unless someone knows my bike. I can ride within several feet of people I know in both my personal and professional lives. (Yes I have a very distinct difference), and they are none the wiser just who it is under the helmet. Its an interesting concept when you wave at them and they wave back with an actual look of utter confusion. Makes for a chuckle.
Why the reference to the song? Because I become "the stranger." By workday I am clad in white shirt, tie, shaved face and neat hair. By night/weekend, I am unshaven, t-shirt/jeans type of bloke, my music probably a little too loud in my truck (too many acca dacca concerts) and the last thing I want is someone to be hassling me re my work. So to quote some lyrics at you all:
"Well we all have a face, that we hideaway forever, and we take it out and show ourselves, when everyone has gone, some are satin, some are steel, some are silk and some are leather, there the faces of the stranger but we love to try them on."
For me, I become that person when I pull on my helmet-to everyone that knows me, I AM the same person inside, but the stranger is in control when the helmets on.
And yes, I even whistle the tune (sorta) in my helmet as I ride.......
Its a laugh innit? Okay, that's enough of my ramblings of a twisted soul. I'm off for a ride tonight. Until next time, take care of yourselves, and each other.
*walks off whistling the tune* Gaaard dammit!
