Sorry I might have missed something, but does anyone know why they buried them? Were they never unpacked, or did they just not have pilots or well enough placed strips/fuel dumps to get them across to India and away from the Japs?

I would kill for a chance to fly a real spitfire... but given my moderate private pilot level of flying skills combined with the narrow wheel track and huge torque I'd probably end up ground looping the thing (which would be sad *sigh*).

    Oh well... I can dream...

Ground loop error in a Rans you tube video for the non pilots to explain what I'm talking about (if it happened it would be LOTS faster and harder in a spitfire).

I had to laugh - its the same sort of thing that happened to me last friday when I low sided my bike

which reinforces what i said If I owned a spitfire i would most likley low side it LOL

I sometimes try and describe light plane flying to non pilots as a cross between motor bike riding and speed boat driving but in 3 dimensions...

Ground looping is in 2 dimensions though and it's sort of a cross between spinning a car and low siding a bike (don't ask me how I know...) so your comment is damn close to the truth :)

I understand that with a ground loop you also take into account lift from the wings

its like a bouncing low side

The clips so far have mostly been earlier, Battle of Britain vintage Spits, with Merlins. Seems the ones just found are much later Mk19 Spits, with the bigger Griffon engine, with the 5 bladed prop. This is a Mk 19.
